The gluten-free patisserie “Maison Plume”

Gluten-free pastry at patisserie Maison Plume

The gluten-free patisserie Maison Plume is one of the few gluten-free places that didn’t quite win me over in Paris. As a place, the patisserie is very well-located and sweetly decorated. The pastries (costing at least 7.40 €) are artistic and beautiful. But you won’t get out of here for less than 12€ per person and considering the price, it tastes rather average. This harsh-sounding judgment is based on trying only one of their pastries. So, for the sake of fairness, it should be mentioned that this might not be very representative.

Cozy look and feel in the Marais

The interior is thrown together. The chairs, armchairs, tables of different sizes and warm coloured walls, make it feel cosy in the café. There is seating outside, allowing each visitor to find a great spot. The gluten-free patisserie is located on a street in the Marais neighbourhood, but it’s a small street and not very busy. The waiters are nice and extremely efficient, you don’t wait long for your order here. In addition to coffee, there is also a very large selection of teas.

In summer, the Maison Plume also sells ice cream, as the offer in the window still shows. However, that was no longer available at the end of September. A very nice feature of the patisserie is that it is possible to order entire cakes or tarts. For a lovely event where you want to serve something other than homemade cake, this is a great alternative.

Plume Cappuccino – glutenfree and no sugar

The pastry I ordered is called Plume Cappuccino. It costs 7 € to go, and € 7.90 to eat when sitting in the café. Based on the way it is made, it reminds me of an eclair. The dough on the outside is multilayered, and slightly firm but to me, it is a bit too dry. Also, the cream on top does not change that. Additionally, there is coffee cream inside. It is light, but its firmness and consistency remind me of pudding and it does have some potential for improvement.

Prices that don’t hurt – at least the drinks

The coffee prices are very fair, especially for the Marais neighbourhood where the patisserie is located. Paying around 4€ for a hot drink, as you do at Maison Plume, is rare in that area. For a cappuccino, quite usually the prices range from 5-6 €. Without a problem, you can pay 9 € for a hot chocolate. But at Maison Plume the prices for the gluten-free pastries are all at least 7-8 euros, and they are not exactly big.
