Suzette at Pappelallee in Berlin Prenzlauer Berg

Ein Galette in Nahaufnahme auf dem Tisch

Rediscovering your inner French woman over a gluten-free galette in Berlin’s Prenzlauer Berg district

The sweet little Crêperie Suzette is well filled on a normal weekday afternoon. An above-average amount of French sounds through the air and the words are accompanied by fresh swaths of just-squeezed lemon juice as well as melted chocolate.

In addition to a crêpe Suzette or Nutella, however, you can also get original Breton galette here. Galette is practically a savory version of the classic crêpe, which is popular everywhere. Made from buckwheat flour, a galette is gluten-free and can be enjoyed by people with gluten intolerance, gluten sensitivity or celiac disease.

Gluten free galette from buckwheat flour

Due to the sharper taste of buckwheat, the flour used for the specialty from Brittany, a galette is often served savory. Mushrooms, Edam cheese, an egg or even bacon are added. The possible combinations are many.

I ordered a Galette Parisienne with ham, edam, mushrooms and egg. I was brought a perfectly folded evenly browned “pancake” to the table. The dough was crispy, the mushrooms perfectly precooked and the egg yolk unerringly placed in the center, undamaged and of yellow-orange color.

Gluten-free crêpes are not offered, by the way. But there is a variety of French wines, cider, café and hot chocolate.

Gluten free visit without stomach ache

Not only was my food incredibly tasty, but in retrospect I had no problems whatsoever with traces of gluten in the food. For many, probably the most important information about my visit. The partner suitability of this meal is above average, as it is originally a gluten-free meal.

You can only pay cash on site. Here is the website of the restaurant with more information.
